Moving the 'Mephisto' tank to the Queensland Museum, Bowen Hills, Brisbane, 1919
contributed by QldPics, taken in 1919
(contact QldPics about this picture)

The 'Mephisto' is the sole surviving German tank from World War I, captured by Australian troops in 1918 and brought back to Australia as a war trophy in 1919. This image shows the Mephisto being manoeuvred through the gates of the Queensland Museum on 23 August 1919. 'Around midnight on 21/22 August two Brisbane City Council steam-rollers departed from the wharf with Mephisto, travelling on its own tracks, in tow. Some difficulty was experienced when turning corners and the tank damaged the road surface in several areas. But the entourage eventually arrived at the old Museum building in Gregory Terrace about 11am "...amidst excitement, and in the presence of a fair crowd..." and Mephisto was placed in a prominent position in front of the building.' (Information taken from: M. Whitmore, Mephisto : A7v sturmpanzerwagen 506 : a history of the sole surviving First World War german tank, c1989)
