Hon. Sir Pope Alexander Cooper, Chief Justice of Queensland, 1880

Portrait of Sir Pope Cooper. Pope Cooper was a Crown Prosecutor who in January 1879 entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the Member for Bowen. In December 1880 he became Attorney-General and held that position until January 1883 when he resigned on being appointed a Supreme Court Judge for the northern district of Queensland. He was Chief Justice of Queensland from 1903 until his retirement at the age of 74 in 1922. He was Chancellor of the University of Queensland from 1915 until 1922 (Information taken from: Australian dictionary of biography, v. 8, 1981).

Pope Cooper and Justice Edmund Sheppard were involved in the trial of Joseph Mutter for the murder of Maria Steffan in Ravenswood 1878.
