One of the earliest photographs of Bowen, which was established in 1861. Looks out to the waters of what was then known as Port Denison (later Port of Bowen). By 1867, Bowen was competing with Townsville as the major port for the northern goldfields and pastoral industry. The jetty, seen in the centre of the photograph, was completed in 1866.
