Pencil sketch of Ballandean station by Conrad Martens. Caption : 'Ballindean, H. Nicol, Esq.' The sketch appears to be closely related to another view of Ballandean executed by Martens and dated 19 March, 1952. The buildings shown in the work were constructed of slab and were located in the vicinity of Pigsty Creek. At the time of Martens visit to Ballandean, Henry Nicol was the owner of the station. ( Description supplied with photograph) Conrad Martens a painter was born in London in 1801 and arrived in Sydney, Australia on the 17 April, 1835. He designed the font for St Thomas's Church of England, North Sydney. Martens was a landscape and seascape painter, and was the first professional artist to paint in Brisbane. His work 'View of Brisbane, 1861' was bequeathed to the Queensland Art Gallery. Martens died at North Sydney on the 21 August, 1878.
