Mr Charles Thomas Gadd

Buried 10 April 1939

The death occurred on Saturday of last of Mr Charles Thomas Gadd. Mr Gadd who was born in Donnybrook came to Avenel as a boy in 1874 and at the time of his death, he had been a resident of Avenel for 65 years. Deceased father the late William Barton Gadd, started business here as a wheat buyer at about the time the railway was opened from schoolhouse lane to Benalla.

Mr Gadd senior subsequently opened up the business of general merchant, and on his death, Mr C. T. Gadd carried on until his demise.

Deceased at the age of 19 years married Miss Agnes Planck, daughter of Mr Planck, school teacher, at Avenel.

A large family of 11 children was the result of the union, ten of whom eight daughters and two sons together with the widow, are left to mourn their loss.

Mr Gadd in his youth was a fine cricketer, and one of Avenel’s best all round footballer’s. He was a J.P. a trustee of the Avenel Waterworks Trust, Cemetery Trust, Racecourse Trust and Recreation Reserve Trust. He was very energetic and took a great interest in all local festivities until about 6 years ago, when his health began to fail.

The funeral took place at the Avenel Cemetery on Monday. Amongst the many floral tributes were wreaths from Avenel Race Club, Gun Club and Cricket Club.

Rev G. Menlove conducted the service at the grave side and Mr Diggle the funeral arrangements.
