Sgt Jack Nightingale

Died as a result of War Wounds

Dated 4 May 1944

It is with the deepest regret that we have to record the death of one of Avenel’s most popular young heroes - Sgt Jack Nightingale, who died of wounds, received on 4 May at Tarakan. Jack was one of the first local lads to answer’s their country’s call and went overseas with one of the first divisions. He was one of the famous rats of Tobruk. After his return to Australia he served with his Division against the japs in New Guinea and finally at Tarakan has given his life for his country.

Prior to his enlistment Jack was one of Avenel’s best all-round sportsman and showed marked ability on the football field. His quiet, unassuming and sincere character made him a favourite with young and old. And both young and old mourn his passing and extend to his wife and sister the full-hearted sympathy of the district.

“They shall not grow old,

As we who are left to grow old.”
