Birds of Victoria - #9 - Heidelberg Region Eastern Rosella, Main Yarra Trail, Viewbank, VIC

I recently returned to Melbourne and took the opportunity to investigate two birding sites that I regularly visited during our 40 years’ residence in the north-eastern suburb of Viewbank.

Birds of Victoria - #9 - Heidelberg Region Gang-gang Cockatoo, Banyule Flats Reserve, Viewbank, VIC

These sites are the wetlands of Banyule Flats Reserve and the nearby section of the Main Yarra Trail. More detail on the Reserve may be obtained from –

www.banyule.vic.gov.au/Services/Parks-and-Facilities/Banyule-Flats-Reserve

Birds of Victoria - #7(b) – East Gippsland (Orbost Region) Darter, Snowy River Mouth, Marlo, VIC

The trail starts in Templestowe and follows the Yarra River all the way to Southbank in the City of Melbourne. It is a much loved shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Birds of Victoria - #6 – Mornington Peninsula Wedge-tailed Eagle, Eagle Ridge Golf Course, Rosebud, VIC

On this occasion, I started from the carpark at the end of Somerset Drive, Viewbank, and restricted my activity to the aforesaid wetlands (ie. to the right at the end of the carpark) and that section of the trail from the wetlands to about 1 km past the Rosanna Golf Course (ie. to the left).

Birds of Victoria - #8 - The Mallee Region Australasian Grebes, Hard Hill Tourist Reserve, Wedderburn, VIC

I understand that over 150 different species of birdlife have been sighted in the Reserve and the adjacent Trail, so it is a highly recommended birding venue right in the heart of metropolitan Melbourne.

Birds of Victoria - #2 - Ballarat / Bendigo Region Australasian Grebe, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, VIC

During my recent visit I saw – Great / Little Black / Little Pied Cormorant, Silver Gull, Pacific Black Duck, Australian Wood Duck, Chestnut Teal, Black Swan, Eurasian Coot, Australian White Ibis, Australian Raven, Little / Red Wattlebird, Grey Fantail, Australian Magpie, Magpie-lark, Galah, Spotted Turtle-Dove, Laughing Kookaburra, Grey Butcherbird, Rainbow Lorikeet, Welcome Swallow, Australasian Grebe, Dusky Moorhen, Purple Swamphen, Spotted Pardalote, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Eastern Rosella, Willy Wagtail, Superb Fairy-wren, Sacred Kingfisher, Common Blackbird, Common Starling, Noisy / Bell Miner, Common Myna and Grey Currawong.

Birds of Victoria - #8 - The Mallee Region Peaceful Dove, Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, Buronga, NSW

However, on previous visits, I have also come across – Wedge-tailed Eagle, Tawny Frogmouth, Peregrine Falcon, Whistling Kite, Australian Hobby, Brown / Striated Thornbill, Masked Lapwing (Spurwinged Plover), Gang-gang Cockatoo, Long-billed Corella, Mistletoebird, Common Bronzewing, Silvereye, Hoary-headed Grebe, White-faced Heron, Fantail Cuckoo, Grey Shrike-thrush, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike, Straw-necked Ibis, Dusky Woodswallow, Pied Currawong, Great Egret and Eastern Spinebill.

Birds of Victoria - #5 - South Gippsland Echidna (Sun-baking), Wonthaggi Bushland Reserve, VIC

During this outing, I also got very close to a sizeable echidna as it wandered out in the open in search of its daily intake. Thankfully, I didn’t come across any of the tiger snakes that are active, and often seen, in this area over the warmer summer period.
