Margate is located in southeast Tasmania and has a population of around 3,400 (49.2% male, 50.8% female). Around 987 families live in the area and of those 46.0% have one or more children under the age of 15. 12.4% of families have only a single parent while 36.8% of couples have no children. Margate covers an area of approximately 5675 hectares or around 57 square kilometres (km2) (14022 acres).

The most common income bracket for people living in Margate is between $400-$599 per week (14.1% of people). 5.5% have no income and high income earners ($2000 or more per week) account for 1.8% of the population.

Of the 1154 private dwellings in Margate 36% are owned outright by their occupiers, 50% are being purchased (eg. by mortgage) and 11% are being rented.
