If so, Report it |  | 2 - German immigrant family on their farm, Bethania area, 1872 (Contributed by: QldPics) German colonists took up blocks of scrubland in the Lower Logan and Albert districts in the 1860s. They grew field crops such as maize, pumpkin, and arrowroot. Lutheran settlers built their own style of farm buildings. This photograph is a good example of the half-timbered 'barn' built in Northern Europe. Grain may have been stacked in the top storey while the farmer and his family lived down below. Most men are dressed in suits and hats and are watching a demonstration of a new tractor. The tractor is an IHC tractor (H series) with dual front wheels, extendable rear wheels and long rear axle. This tractor became very popular for inter-row cultivation of maize, cotton, peas and sorghum. There is a mid mounted mechanical lift cultivator rig attached to the front. The demonstration is being carried out on a cotton field. (Description supplied with photograph)
