Launceston is located on the South Esk River in northeast Tasmania a distance of about 160km north from Hobart (show me). With a population of around 68,000, Launceston is one of the larger cities in Australia. Launceston is at an elevation of approximately 13m above sea level. The nearest ocean is the Southern Ocean about 170km southwest of Launceston.

The nearest more populous place is the city of Hobart which is 160km away with a population of about 130,000 (show me a map with Launceston and Hobart).

The centre of Launceston is at the intersection of the Tasman Highway, the East Tamar Highway and the West Tamar Highway.

Launceston is in the fourteenth most popular region in Tasmania with overseas tourists.
