Back in 1962, a standard gauge railway connection to Albury NSW was opened making it possible for trains to travel to Sydney without the change of gauge problems for passengers an freight at Albury. The Spirit of Progress which ran to Albury was thus placed on standard gauge bogies, and two brand new 14 car trains named Southern Aurora were built to accommodate sleeping car passengers. This picture is of the Melbourne bound Southern Aurora passing through West Footscray with the then familiar distinctive purple neon 'Southern Aurora' sign on the rear.
