      The National Railway Museum's collection includes a US Baldwin-built industrial loco. Preserved large Baldwin steam locomotives are very rare in Australia, yet they were relatively common in the late 19th and early 20th century here. They simply didn't last as long as British-built locos, and tended to be scrapped at the end of their working lives, seen as an early example of the 'throw-away' society. But they were cheaper to buy, and the builder filled orders much more rapidly than the Brits. Baldwin could build to virtually any design, and the product usually served its owner well enough during its life.
